YOU ASKED: ARE ALL ABUSERS CONSIDERED NARCISSISTS?
WE ANSWERED:
No, not all abusers are narcissists. While some abusers may have narcissistic traits or narcissistic personality disorder, abuse can stem from a variety of psychological, emotional, or situational factors.
Narcissistic abusers often manipulate, control, or devalue others to maintain power and feed their ego. Other abusers may act out due to unresolved trauma, poor emotional regulation, learned behaviors, substance abuse, or mental illness—not necessarily narcissism. Abuse is a behavior, not a diagnosis. Narcissism is a personality structure or disorder.
Narcissistic abuse is intentional, ego-drive manipulation. Just for clarity, I’d like to share some common signs of narcissistic abuse if you think you may be dealing with a person who exhibits this behavior. Love bombing, gaslighting, devaluation, isolation; and discarding are all signs and terms commonly used in the world of domestic violence advocates and survivors that are more than worth your time looking up if you’re not familiar with them; and if you think you may be in a relationship with a narcissist.
If you're experiencing abuse, narcissistic or otherwise, it's crucial to prioritize your safety and well-being. Remember, you deserve to feel safe and valued in your relationships. Recognizing the type of abuse you're experiencing is the first step toward healing and reclaiming your life.
