I want to address Mom guilt. It can be crushing, a constant burden on your back causing you to buckle…if you let it. I have carried that kind of weight and have seen others hobbling along with this mass attached to them as well. It is life-sapping, causing everything you do to be slow, burdened, toilsome, like you’re not running on all cylinders.
I recently spoke with a friend who had just received a phone call informing her that her elementary age child had been injured in a head-on collision. She had sent him on his regularly scheduled time with his Dad, her ex-husband, during spring break. Did she remember having reservations that particular day about sending him? No. She sent him as usual, but reported to me the guilt she experienced was enormous.
When something unexpected like this happens, you absolutely cannot go there in your head. You just can’t even cast a glance toward the “what if’s”, “what if I had”, “I should haves” or “what could have been done differently” path. It is dark and thorny and it’s hard to get out of. I’ve been there and wasted many a precious day. Just don’t go there.
Secondly, this did not take God by surprise. He has already been to this day. Psalm 139:16 proves this when it reads,” all my days were written in your book and ordained for me before one of them came to be.” Did God cause this? Absolutely not. God =Good. Devil=Bad. It’s elementary. God has been to every day in your future and has new mercies and grace to pour out for each day.
So, I encourage you to unstrap any burden of guilt you may be struggling under. The key to unlocking these tethers is Romans 8:1. “Now there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” If you are in Christ, you are declared Not Guilty!
