There may be a good bit of Rocky Top in the city’s newest lawyer but he’s a full-blooded Rebel and is right at home in Sunflower County.
Jonathan Davis grew up in East Tennessee near the Appalachian Trail but he’s found a flatland home in the Mississippi Delta.
Davis moved to Indianola and opened his own law firm in the historic Crosthwait, Terney and Noble firm. The Greenville, Tennessee native has taken to the lower altitude and Delta way of life as it’s similar to the area he grew up in.
“I’m from a small town and my wife is from here. It’s the slower pace of life and the commute of 30 seconds that is nice,” he said laughing. “I don’t have to necessarily be working like I was in Memphis with 12-15 billable hours a day. I can finish my work and come home to my wife and kids.”
The father of 14-month old twins went to Ole Miss for both his undergrad and law degree.
His dad and uncle are both Rebels and took Jonathan to Ole Miss football games to properly train the young man.
He met his wife, Ole Miss grad and Sunflower County native, Margaret Ross Long, after he graduated but on campus at Ole Miss at a baseball game. Jonathan was working in Memphis at the time.
“She moved to Memphis and got a job with Le Bonheur Children's Hospital. We got married, had twins and then relocated to Sunflower County in December of 2020,” he said. “I did family law for a firm in Memphis. That was the majority of my practice. I didn’t see a future doing that for the rest of my life.”
Though his life is no John Grisham novel, he enjoys the legal world and no two days seem to be alike.
“I didn’t see myself where I was for the rest of my life. And there was an opportunity to purchase the practice of Richard Noble and Frank Crosthwait,” he said. “We felt like the small town atmosphere was great to raise the family. And having my own practice was something I wanted to do. All the pieces fell into place.”
Davis noted the majority thus far of his general practice work has been real estate with title searches, title commitment, loan closings and estate work.
“But whatever you need; one day I could be doing a criminal case in Leflore County and that afternoon doing a loan closing.”
During COVID and even somewhat post-COVID, Davis has continued working adding Zoom to his list of achievements and skills.
“It’s been good and flexible. Numerous Zoom hearings and conferences. We’ve adjusted and no hiccups so to speak,” he said.
Growing up, Davis enjoyed being in the mountains to hike and camp and fly fish and he’s looking to find some bass that will tackle his flies.
“I like to fly fish for trout but I hope to fly fish for some largemouth bass,” he said. “It’s a fun hobby.”
He has tied his own flies but hasn’t had the time recently to do so with 14-month old daughters keeping him and his wife busy.
In looking at his business, he understands everyone will need a lawyer at some point in their life to handle some aspect. And he’s always available to lend a hand.
“For the happy times when you buy a house or land. For the sad times when you have a divorce or probating the will of a loved one, at some point you’ll need a lawyer and we’re here to help. I do it fair and reasonable and I have pro-bono clients. I’d like to work with some non-profits to get some clinics going on a regular basis. There’s a need here and its very fulfilling.”
