Evelyn Cox Winters of Indianola, age 93, died peacefully on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2024, at Walter B. Crook Nursing Facility in Ruleville. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend to many.
The daughter of Bennie Watson Cox and Wilna Daves Cox of Blackhawk, she attended Blackhawk School until she met the love of her life, Arthur Borden Winters. They were married August 4, 1946, and were married over 56 years.
Evelyn loved her church, her family, children, flowers, walking, biking, cooking, and visiting with her friends. She was affectionately called Mamaw by her family and so many others in the community. She was a people person who never met a stranger. She was an active member of Second Baptist Church of Indianola for more than 60 years serving on several committees.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Borden Winters; her parents, Bennie Watson Cox and Wilna Daves Cox; infant son, Ricky Stanley Winters; and siblings, Ben Alvin Cox, McCoy Cox, Bobby Cox and Billy Cox.
Evelyn is survived by: five children, Diana Winters Gordon (Owen) of Skene, Warren Dale Winters (Teresa) of Pensacola, Fla., Arthur Steven Winters (Debbie) of Denham Springs, La., Michael Cox Winters of Athens, Tenn., and Melissa Winters Tupman (Bryan) of Marshall, Minn. She is also survived by her sister, Sarah Eunice Pittman; and her brother, Ronald Cox (Linda); along with many nieces and nephews. Evelyn was a proud grandmother to 19 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
A visitation will be held from 1 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30, at Burton Funeral Home in Indianola, followed by the service at 2:30 p.m. Interment will immediately follow at Indianola City Cemetery.
Burton Funeral Home of Indianola has been entrusted with arrangements.
