Services for James Edward Hamel will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, 2018 at Wilson and Knight Funeral Home, Greenwood.
Mr. Hamel, 79, went home to be with our Lord on Thursday, Sept. 20, 2018, at Greenwood Leflore Hospital.
Mr. Hamel, Jimmy, or Pops, as he was so affectionately known, was born in Greenville on May 12, 1939, to Grey Alexander Hamel and Dena Merle Edwards Hamel. Jimmy was raised in Indianola where he graduated high school and attended Mississippi Delta Junior College in Moorhead, and joined the US Army National Guard. He was a computer programmer at Lewis Grocery Company and later met and married Donna Jeanette Ferguson. They made their home in Indianola for a while and had one daughter, Haley. They later moved to Acona to try his hand at farming. Jimmy quit farming and started running the Co-Op in Vaiden, then moved to Greenwood and worked for Delta Purchasing/Agraliance Corporation, where he retired. Jimmy enjoyed all aspects of hunting and fishing and was a lifetime member of Rocky Branch Hunting Club and was a member of the American Legion. His main passion in life was spending time with his family and friends, watching his grandchildren play in numerous sporting activities, and teaching them how to hunt and fish.
Mr. Hamel was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife, Jeanette.
He is survived by his daughter, Haley Hamel Funderburk of Greenwood; four granddaughters, Lexie Funderburk of Greenwood, Lindsay Funderburk of Starkville, Mary-Hamel Funderburk of Greenwood, and Makenzie Funderburk of Greenwood; sister, Quinlan Louise Hamel Jones of Smartsville, Calif.; and many more nieces and nephews that were so special to him.
Pallbearers will be Hunter Box, Cayson Cox, Shae Ferguson, Shaw Ferguson, Danny Cox, Will Stowers, and Bruce Pittman. Honorary Pallbearers will be the members of Rocky Branch Hunting Club.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Douglas Bowden, Dr. Ko, and the wonderful nurses and staff at Greenwood Leflore Hospital for taking such great care of their loved ones over the years.
Visitation will be from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at Wilson and Knight Funeral home. Interment will follow in Acona Methodist Church Cemetery.
