The Beta Rho Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. will host a mentorship breakfast aimed at educating high school students about the value and legacy of historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs).
The event, titled “Why Choose HBCUs?”, is scheduled for 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, April 4, at the gymnasium of Gentry High School. Organizers are inviting students from Sunflower, Leflore, Grenada, Humphreys and Carroll counties to attend.
According to organizers, the program will explore the origins and historical significance of HBCUs, including their role in shaping opportunities for African American students and their impact during the Civil Rights Era. Attendees will also receive information on financial aid, including FAFSA, and hear about notable figures who attended HBCUs.
HBCU recruiters are expected to be on site to provide additional information and answer questions from prospective students. Alumni of HBCUs are encouraged to attend wearing apparel representing their institutions to show support and inspire attendees.
The event is free and open to the public. Breakfast will be provided.
