FRONT PAGE NEWS: The first cotton bloom was brought in Monday by J. C. Dailey from his Brady Plantation. This is much earlier than last year’s first bloom.
Indianola is the best town in the Delta and has more paved streets than any Delta City and that is because her city officials are progressive.
SOCIETY: “A Perfect Day” was that in which Miss Rebecca Hardy, the beautiful young daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Hardy exchanged sacred marriage vows with Mr. Robert Alexander Lipscomb.
LOCAL HISTORY: It will probably be of interest to some that the first marriage license recorded in Sunflower County was to Austin Thomas and Belle Haslet. The license was issued by J. R. Baird on July 20. 1871.
LOCAL NEWS: Last Saturday the Robertshaw Company, new owners of Heathman Plantation gave a barbeque for their tenants and some friends from Indianola. Mr. Robertshaw and his manager, W. Goldbold, saw that every tenant and their guests had a grand time.

Eddie Fritts, owner and manager of WNLA FM/AM was elected treasurer of the Mississippi Broadcasters Association at their convention in Biloxi last week.
The Delta Chapter of the Society of Certified Public Accountants has elected Sam Schwartz, comptroller of Lewis Grocer Company as President for the coming year. The Delta chapter includes eighteen counties

INVERNESS NEWS: Christopher Riddell Jones, a May graduate of the University of Mississippi has been named to the 1970 Edition of Who’s Who among students in American colleges. He was an honor student at the University of Mississippi.
The Mississippi Bar Association recently honored attorneys who have been practicing 60 years or more. Those honored from Indianola were Gordon Lyon, J. H. Price and George Ritchey, Sr.

FRONT PAGE NEWS BY DAVID RUSHING: A prisoner escaped from the Sunflower County jail and was making his getaway when Police Chief Ken Winter arrested him. The prisoner was driving North on Highway 49 on a tractor with the lights off.
MOORHEAD NEWS: Carondelet Grubb has been named to the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners. Dr. Grubb is the daughter of Carl and Brenda Grubb of Moorhead.

SOCIETY NEWS: Mr. and Mrs. John Wright of Ruleville announce the approaching marriage of their daughter Leigh Ann Golden to Bret Reynolds of Indianola. The wedding will be held on Saturday, July 9th.
CENTRAL DELTA ACADEMY NEWS: The CDA Daycare students have been growing a garden as a school project. A photo pictures Preston Forbes, Sally Parker Rowland, Slade Boone, Wilson Reed, Lauren Moudy and Julie Boone inspecting their harvest of the day.
INVERNESS NEWS: The Inverness Chamber of Commerce honored Mollye and Bill Lester as the Couple of the Year and Mark Gary was named Citizen of the Year.

UPDATE: In May, Trent Barger was featured several times as Valedictorian and other honors at Indianola Academy. Today he is the busy dad of three children and lives in Houston, Texas. He is Director of Purchasing for Christian Brothers Automotive Corporation and has been with the company for nine years.
