Good Mornin’! Good Mornin’!
The last weekend of September is upon us and even though it feels like a regular summer one, there’s plenty of fall related festivals around to kick us into fall gear.
There’s always plenty of great fun and food to be found in Sunflower County, especially on the weekends.
But in Ruleville and Indianola, they’re kicking it up a notch this weekend.
The 14th Great Ruleville Roast and Run starts on Friday in Rule Park and the two-day event has plenty of live music, fireworks, arts and crafts, BBQ, children’s activities, health screenings and a 5K that you can run or walk.
The Memphis BBQ Network will be on hand judging teams cooking in the second of the three legs of the Delta BBQ Battle. There will also be a steak grilling competition, classic car, truck and tractor show and plenty of entertainment and arts and crafts as well as a pancake breakfast hosted by the Drew Rotary Club and children’s activities.
It all starts Friday at 6:00 p.m. and then gets going again Saturday at 9:00 a.m. and ends at 5:00 p.m. But right here in the county seat, the Indian Bayou Arts and Eats Festival will be in full swing with food and fun and plenty of art. Just head to downtown Indianola towards the bayou and the BB King Museum and you’ll run right up on it.
It all begins on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. and runs to 4:00 p.m. The food part will include the Craig Claiborne Pecan Pie Competition inside the museum. Stick around for cookbook author, TV personality and Greenville native Ann Hollowell who will put on a cooking demonstration from 11:00 a.m. to noon using pecans. Word is you can ask questions and get to taste her pecan delicacies.
For those wanting to enter the pecan pie competition, be at the museum before 11:00 a.m. pie in hand or if you chose to do the appetizer category, bring that. Boy, I wish I had some of Miss Willie’s Cajun Candy Maker recipe pralines. But who am I kidding?
Those would be long gone before ever getting to a competition.
The entry fee is $10 and the two categories are Pecan Pie Traditional or Creative AND Pecans as an appetizer - dips, spreads, bites, soup – you get the picture. Winners get handmade pottery as their prize.
There’s also the Delta Dog Show sponsored by Planters Bank and the Sunflower County Humane Society that starts at 2:00 p.m.
There will also be some four-legged friends that you can adopt or just spend some time with. And as always, world-renowned cartoonist and Moorhead native, Ricky Nobile will be on hand creating personalized caricatures that you’ll want to find a frame for and hang in a special place. But he’s only there from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. before his Sharpies dry out.
You’ll also be able to look through handmade arts and crafts, artisan food products, potters, photographers and take time to visit with the artists and learn more about their talents. Bring the kids for children’s art activities with the fire department and local churches. Oh, and there’s live music.
Sunflower County is where it’s at this weekend so “take me to Ruleville” and Indianola!
