Recently, I had to trade trucks. I loved my old truck. It was paid for, and I had less than 100,000 miles showing on the odometer.
I planned to run this truck for a long time.
You know what they say about the best laid plans of mice and men?
One cold morning, I turned the ignition key, heard a faint pop on the driver’s side, and nothing happened. In fact, the steering wheel was locked, and I could not move the gear shift.
The truck had to be towed to the shop. The mechanic thought he had it fixed, but a week or two later, the same thing happened.
Off to the shop on the back of a tow truck again. This malfunction happened two more times before the mechanic called me over to the side and gave me the bad news.
“We may have to pull the harness out and replace it. If it were me, I think I would trade it.”
I followed his advice.
The truck had become unreliable. I could no longer trust it. I was already crossing my fingers hoping it would crank every time I turned the ignition.
Politicians are the same way. Most of us normal folks hope that the people we elect will represent us and do what is right.
But last week, we had 12 Republican senators who misfired.
We knew that four were “Never Trumpers,” but we had no idea that 12 would vote against a Republican president who is doing everything he can to prevent everyone in South America from invading our country illegally.
In February, 76,000 people attempted to enter our country illegally.
In the month of March, Homeland Security is expecting 100,000 to attempt to enter.
Yes, there is a crisis on the southern border, and anyone who pays attention to any news report knows that we cannot allow this influx of illegal aliens to continue to flow into this country.
The President knows that if “open borders” becomes the norm, then this country will change drastically.
Unfortunately, Senator Roger Wicker was among the “Never Trumpers” who voted against the President. Like John Kerry, Wicker “voted for it before he voted against it.” In his statement , Wicker said, “Prior to my vote on H. J Res. 46, I had a very cordial conversation with the president.
I shared with him that I strongly support his plan on our southern border, but that an emergency declaration was not the right approach.”
He went on to say, “I am concerned about the precedent an emergency declaration which might empower a future liberal president...”
I am happy that the Senator had “a very cordial conversation with the President,” because it may be the last one he has. I suppose its always good to be “cordial,” but in this case, I suspect he overplayed his “cordiality.” One of the main reasons President Trump was elected was to control the southern border.
Now “Cordial” Roger is voting against his own President, and I suspect he does it at his own peril. How can the “Cordial One” hope to get President Trump helping him when he votes to deny President Trumpå’s declaration. Mr. Wicker has misfired.
Like my old truck, we must now wonder what else is he against - or more importantly, what is he for?
The Democrats are on track to impeach the President in the House. Will Wicker vote to remove the President when the proceedings reach the Senate? We now know that he is with the “Never Trump” crowd, so this question must be asked.
But remember this. President Trump is a powerful person who throughout his lifetime has wielded great power. He understands how to use power, and as we have seen, he has adapted extremely well to the presidency. Powerful international leaders may not like him, but they respect him.
Previous Mississippi Senators have been able to keep army bases open.
What happens now if Keesler Air Force Base is on the list of bases to be closed? Can Wicker go to the President and ask for help? President Trump is a fighter and he has a long memory.
There are other things that he can do to be “cordial” to our senior senator. Important grants can mysteriously be denied, ships can be built in Virginia rather that on the Gulf Coast, and federal aid, which Mississippi depends on, can suddenly be reduced.
The fallout with other “Never Trump” senators has just begun. Senator Roy Blunt (R-Missouri) has been disinvited from a local GOP gathering. Wanda Martins, a GOP leader, told Blunt, “I am so disappointed in you that I can hardly speak. Please don’t tell me that I don’t understand. I understand completely.”
