Seinfeld’s Newman once referred to Mother’s Day as the “mother of all mail days.”
If that’s still true, perhaps the next few days will provide the U.S. Postal Service with a much-needed stimulus, without the need for Congress interfering. Probably not, though.
This Sunday’s celebration of moms everywhere will certainly be a special one.
These ladies have probably never been more deserving of their own day than they are this year.
My wife Callie has been long-suffering, and I mean she’s been suffering for a long time.
She’s a stay-at-home-mom, but I don’t think any of us ever thought stay-at-home would have such a literal meaning.
She, like so many other moms, has spent the past two months cooped up in the house with our girls, Ellie and Sarah.
The backyard is big, but I can imagine it has seemed a little smaller every day.
Somehow, though, she has managed to keep the girls from resorting to all-out war, all the while keeping the house clean, the garden weeded and food cooked for all.
It has really been amazing to witness, as my few feeble contributions have not amounted to much over the past 60 days.
Just two weeks ago, Callie had a birthday, and it came and went without much fanfare.
We celebrated indoors instead of going out to dinner.
Hopefully this weekend we’ll be able to squeeze into a restaurant booth and do a late celebration for her birthday and say thank you to her for being such a great mother.
My own mom has spent the entire pandemic on the Gulf Coast, working as a travel nurse at a hospital in Biloxi.
She’s always wanted to try travel nursing, and she picked that one as her first assignment because it was closer to home than Alaska.
Little did she know back in February that she would be on the front lines, taking care of cancer patients during a pandemic.
We were able to get down to the coast right before the beaches closed in early March, and we’ve only seen Nana once since then.
She’ll return home next week when her 13-week stint is up on the coast, and we are looking forward to seeing her and Papaw again on a regular basis.
Last weekend, we got to visit with Callie’s parents, and our girls had a wonderful time. They have missed them so much.
All the moms in my life deserve a medal for what they have had to endure during this trying time, not to mention what all they do for us during normal times.
This may not end up being the “mother of all mail days,” but I do hope that it’s the mother of all shopping days this spring in our local communities.
Nobody deserves to be celebrated more than our moms, and nobody deserves our support more than our shops, restaurants and other places that provide gifts and food.
If you have the ability this year, buy a little something extra for mom.
The local economy can use the influx of cash, and Lord knows, our moms deserve the gifts.
