Another Friday night of football brings yet another formidable challenge for the Gentry High Rams.
However, beginning tonight, and for the remainder of the season, the outcomes of those games carry much weight.
With this season’s Region 4-4A competition commencing today at 7 p.m., a long road trip awaits the 0-5 Rams prior to taking on the 5-0 Kosciusko High Whippets.
The Rams, fresh off last Friday’s 35-6 loss to a strong, and now 4-1 Clarksdale High squad, will face a Kosciusko High squad which last week defeated 3-2 Choctaw County High of Ackerman by a 41-25 score.
Tonight’s clash between Gentry High and Kosciusko High is the first-ever between these two football programs and to date, there are no common opponents played this season.
The Whippets (named after a very swift British breed of dog), are aptly named as their potent offense is averaging 45.8 points per game this season.
Meanwhile, defensively the Kosciusko defense does its part by allowing but a 12 point per game average to opponents.
Last season, the Whippets compiled a 6-5 record, the fourth consecutive winning season recorded by that school’s football program.
As for their loss last week to Clarksdale High, the Rams began the game in positive fashion. That early success came by way of a 20-yard first period touchdown run by junior running back Jacorey Courtney.
However, those Gentry High points were all which were allowed that night by the staunch Wildcats defense.
By halftime, Clarksdale had built a 28-6 lead and then moved on to their fourth victory of the year.
