Competition with playoff ramifications has now arrived for the Gentry High School Rams football team.
With only Region 2-5A contests now populating the balance of the 1-5 Rams’ schedule, the first of five consecutive regional games begins at 7 p.m. today at Yazoo City High School.
The Rams will attempt to rebound from last Friday’s 49-0 loss to 7A member Germantown High School in Madison. The Mavericks moved their record to a 5-1 mark with the shutout over the Rams.
As for this week’s opponent, the Rams will be taking on an Indians squad sporting a 2-3 record and one which is coming off an open date.
However, the Indians will enter tonight’s game enjoying a two-game win streak.
These recent victories mean much to a Yazoo City football program which previously was suffering through a 24-game losing streak. That long span of time without a win stretches back to the 2021 season.
Of note, the Indians’ recent success has come at the expense of a pair of winless teams.
Two weeks ago, the Indians extended their win streak by claiming an 8-7 decision over the 0-5 Vicksburg High School Gators.
One week prior, a 48-7 pummeling of now 0-6 St. Patrick High of Gulfport occurred, a victory which brought a 2024 season-opening, three-game Yazoo City losing streak to a halt.
In last year’s game with Yazoo City High, the Gentry High Rams earned a dominating 36-0 victory over the Indians, who would move on to record their second consecutive 0-10 season.
Historically, despite a current two-game Gentry High win streak, the Indians still own an 11-9 advantage in this series between the two schools.
