“It just doesn’t get any easier.”
So said Gentry High School Head Coach Derrick Farrow as he looked ahead to tonight’s football matchup with the visiting Wildcats of Clarksdale High School.
The Rams, owners of an 0-4 record, must shake off last Friday’s 34-6 loss to Hazlehurst High (2-1) when they take the field tonight against Clarksdale High School.
Today’s 7 p.m. kickoff against the 3-1 Wildcats also marks the final non-district game of the season for the Rams.
The Wildcats will come to Indianola after suffering their first loss of the season last Friday night; a hard-fought 21-13 decision to South Panola High School in Batesville.
History has not been kind to the Rams when playing Clarksdale High as the Wildcats own a dominating 21-1 series advantage over Gentry High School.
Last year the Wildcats defeated the Rams by a 32-12 margin, a year in which the Clarksdale High team was en route to suffering their first losing season (5-6) since their 2019 campaign.
The last time a Gentry High football team dealt a Clarksdale High squad a loss was in the 1984 season.
As for the Rams loss to visiting Hazlehurst High last Friday night, Coach Farrow noted, “We let them off the hook. We missed two scoring opportunities in the red zone in the first half and then lost momentum in the second half.”
Those missed opportunities still only left the Rams facing a narrow 14-0 deficit at halftime.
However, the Indians took advantage of the Rams’ “lost momentum” and continued to build on their lead in the second half of the contest.
The Rams avoided a shutout in the third period when sophomore quarterback Jadarius Gibson connected with junior Fabien Washington Jr. on a 35-yard touchdown pass.
