Taking a spotless District 1AAA basketball record into this week’s play, the 5-7, 3-0 Indianola Academy Colonels will play host to Kirk Academy of Grenada tonight.
This first of three consecutive 7 p.m. district games up next on the Colonels’ schedule will be followed by a trip next Tuesday to North Delta School in Batesville.
The Colonels kept their district record unblemished during this past week’s play after last Thursday’s visit to Bayou Academy in Cleveland resulted in an exciting 46-44 victory over the Colts.
While a trio of Colonels reached double digit scoring in this contest, it would be a last second bucket by Ashton Powell which gave the Colonels their two point game-winning margin.
The opportunity for the shot was made possible following a steal by DeDe Willis, who then delivered the assist to Powell which enabled the sophomore the opportunity to make his game clinching shot.
Leading the scoring for IA in this game was Stefon Smith, whose double double included 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Following close behind was Willis with a dozen points while Randy Kimble added 10 points to the Colonels’ side of the scoreboard.
Additional Colonels basketball action occurred last Saturday afternoon when top-ranked Heritage Academy of Columbus visited the IA gym and left town with a 47-40 win.
Although staying within striking distance of the Patriots throughout the game, the Colonels were unable to overcome a 22-17 halftime deficit and eventually suffered the loss.
Kimble’s 11 point performance paced IA’s scoring attack while Smith added eight points to the 10 rebounds earned in the contest.
