A new soccer season begins this Friday for the Indianola Academy Lady Colonels, and there will be a new head coach at the helm of the IA program.
This Friday at 4 p.m. the Lady Colonels will attempt to give new Head Coach Alex Deason a victory in his initial appearance when Macon Road Baptist School of Memphis visits.
Coach Deason, who is also known as the Sunflower County agent for the Mississippi State University Extension Service, brings a deep and seasoned history of soccer with him.
As for Macon Road Baptist School, currently members of the Tennessee Athletic Association of Christian Schools, this season’s opening bout promises to be a challenge for the Lady Colonels as the Kingsmen girls have played in five of the last six TAACS state title games.
Meanwhile, Coach Deason’s high school soccer history began at Philadelphia High School where he enjoyed six years of varsity action.
Upon graduation, he moved on to East Central Community College in Decatur and eventually to Mississippi State University.
Despite there not being a men’s soccer program at MSU, Deason played on a travel U-23 team while earning his Bachelors and Masters degree at the school in Starkville.
When reviewing his Indianola Academy team, “Even though the team has not gotten much practice time together I have been rather pleased with the raw talent on the team from the youngest to the oldest.”
In preparation for their 16 game schedule, Deason noted “We have spent most of the first trainings running through drills to get me acquainted with styles and skill sets of each person.”
Optimistically, Coach Deason observed, “Based on practices so far this team will have the strongest defensive back lines that I have been a part of. This is due to age, skill, and communication.”
The new coach also noted that “I am not versed in any of the teams from the district but I know that most of the girls are looking forward to the Washington School match.
It has a sense of rivalry to them.”
