Come-from-behind victories will always be among the most memorable.
Such is the case following Indianola Academy’s Tuesday night 14-12 fastpitch softball victory over Oak Hill Academy in West Point.
Responding in dramatic fashion, Allie Snell drilled a two out, two run single through the right side to plate Gracie Sligh and Leighton Lovelace with the final go-ahead runs.
Entering that sixth inning facing a five-run deficit, the IA squad produced a huge rally to score a total of seven runs and take the lead; and then held on through the seventh frame to claim the game.
Now riding a two-game win streak over District 2-3A opponents, the 8-7, 2-0 Lady Colonels will continue their softball play next Monday with three consecutive home dates.
This string of home games begins next Monday when that same Oak Hill Academy team visits Chism Park.
District action then continues at a rapid pace next Tuesday when the Lady Colonels take on a strong Central Holmes Christian School squad from Lexington.
Both games are tentatively set to begin at 6 p.m.
In their most recent Tuesday night play against Oak Hill Academy, the Lady Colonels found themselves down by a 12-7 margin as the contest entered that game-saving sixth inning of play.
Answering the challenge, the IA squad sent 13 batters to the plate in this pivotal frame and in the process hammered seven hits.
Hits were plentiful for both teams in this slugfest as the Lady Colonels registered 16 hits and were led by Jillian Roberts (double, 2 singles), Lily Putnam (3 singles, 2 RBIs), Mary Grace Beckham (4 singles, 2 RBIs), and Lovelace (3 singles, 3 RBIs).
In the pitcher’s circle, Roberts claimed the win in relief as her five innings of work scattered seven hits while striking out two batters.
Other action this past Monday netted the IA squad an 18-0 district road win over Carroll Academy in Carrollton.
Using 15 hits to help score their runs, the Lady Colonels’ attack began quickly as a game-opening walk was followed by five consecutive hits.
With all nine batters coming to the plate in this opening frame, the IA squad jumped to a 5-0 lead.
Six more IA hits and eight runs followed in the second inning as the Lady Colonels quickly put this eventual three inning game out of reach.
Five IA hitters reached multiple hit status and this list included Roberts (double, single), Putnam (double, 2 singles, 5 RBIs), Anna Grace Rowland (2 singles, 2 RBIs) Beckham (2 singles), and Lovelace (2 singles).
In the pitcher’s circle, Katie Ann Page was dominant as she allowed but a lone second inning single while striking out three and walking none.
