Another come-from-behind and walk-off victory has enabled the Indianola Academy Colonels softball team to keep their District 1AAA record spotless.
On the strength of a last-inning rally and a bases loaded RBI single from Jillian Roberts, the now 12-3, 3-0 Lady Colonels claimed a hard-fought 3-2 decision over visiting Lee Academy of Clarksdale.
The net result of this past week’s play also included the Lady Colonels claiming another District 1AAA victory when they dealt visiting North Delta School of Batesville a 14-2 thrashing Monday night.
Additional softball action continues for IA Head Coach Patrick Davis’ squad next Monday when Washington School of Greenville comes to town for a 6 p.m. non-district contest.
Next Tuesday will then find the Lady Colonels once again on their home field where they will host Bayou Academy of Cleveland in an important district clash.
In their exciting and well-played victory over Lee Academy, the stage was set for the heroics by the Lady Colonels when they came to bat in the bottom of the seventh inning down by a 2-0 margin.
In rapid fire order, Mallory Price delivered a lead-off single to right while Presley Scott Jackson’s hard ground ball was booted by the Fillies’ third baseman.
Freshman Lily Putnam then sent a single to left field and with the bases full, Mattie Beth Williamson’s infield single drove Price across the plate.
The game was then knotted at two apiece after Anna Berry Stevens worked an RBI producing a bases loaded walk out of the Lee Academy pitcher.
Although a ground ball to first base resulted in Putnam being forced out at home, Roberts then came to the plate and delivered her walk-off single to center field to end the game.
Roberts would also claim the win on the mound after coming in relief of Mary Linton Davis, who pitched 6 1/3 innings of the game.
