The stiff challenges continue this Friday night for the North Sunflower Academy Rebels football team.
After a 20-6 home-field loss to Calhoun Academy last Friday night, the 2-3, 1-0 NSA squad will cross the Mississippi River this Friday to take on a 5-1 Marvell Academy Eagles squad.
“Marvell Academy is a very good football team”, said NSA Head Coach Jimmy McGregor.
“They are a larger eight-man football school and their depth, along with their size, makes them a big task for our kids.”
The Eagles, ranked No. 2 among all Eight-Man football teams, defeated NSA by a 52-6 margin last season.
Thus far this season the only loss suffered by the Eagles was a 46-20 loss to top-ranked Manchester Academy of Yazoo City.
Marvell Academy completed last season with an 8-3 record and own a 10-4 series advantage over the Rebels since the 2006 season.
As for last week’s District 1-1A loss to Calhoun Academy, Coach McGregor noted, “We just made a lot of mistakes. Hopefully, we’ll cut those down in number against Marvell Academy.”
In the loss, the Rebels actually owned a 6-0 halftime lead over the Cougars thanks to a 40 yard touchdown run by Jacob Henley.
However, offensive success was difficult to come by in the second half of play as the Rebels were shutout the remainder of the game.
Meanwhile, the Cougars would score two touchdowns in the third period to take a permanent lead and a fourth quarter TD took the score to its final 14-point margin of victory.
