Exploding into their season with 24 first-period points, the North Sunflower Academy Rebels moved on last Friday night to earn a dominating 66-30 victory over Tensas Academy in St. Joseph, La.
“We looked good offensively” said NSA Head Coach Michael Ward. “Defensively we’ve got to improve on our pass coverage but overall it was a good win for us.”
Now facing an open date this week, the Rebels will have two weeks to prepare for their first home game, a Sept. 1 meeting against Briarfield Academy of Lake Providence, La.
In last Friday night’s game versus Tensas Academy, the Rebels went to the dressing room at halftime owning a 38-24 lead after the Chiefs posted 24 second period points on the scoreboard.
Meanwhile, beginning with that same second period, the NSA offense would consistently score 14 points in every quarter remaining in the contest to ultimately earn their 36 point victory.
Offensively in this game the Rebels displayed balance as they scored five times rushing the ball and four times through the air against the Chiefs’ defense.
Using their ground game, the Rebels rushed 37 times for 374 yards and it was Austen Redwine leading the way as he picked up 196 yards and a touchdown with his 11 carries.
Also breaking the century mark was Bennett Boykin, whose 13 rushes resulted in 109 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Through the air, quarterback Jacolby Brown was near perfect as his seven completions in nine attempts earned 171 yards and four touchdown passes.
Bo Dawson was the leader of the receiving corps as his three catches yielded 91 yards and two touchdowns. Additional multiple catches were made by Jaden Patterson, who gathered in a pair of passes for 38 yards. Redwine’s lone reception of the game was also a touchdown play which covered 39 yards.
Defensively, Patrick Boykin’s seven solo, five assist, two sacks, and two forced fumbles paced the NSA defensive effort.
However, Brown and Bennett Boykin also turned in strong numbers as the duo recorded six solo tackles and two assists although Boykin also sacked opposing quarterback four times in this contest.
Other leaders include Dawson (two solos, six assists, one sack, three pass deflections), and Chandler Hayes (five solos, three assists).
