There are now only three District 1-1A contests remaining on the North Sunflower Academy Rebels regular season football schedule.
With this important trio of games beginning with a trip to Deer Creek School in Arcola this Friday, the 2-5, 0-1 Rebels will take the field at 7 p.m. against the 4-4, 0-1 Warriors.
“We are finally getting to play in our own class for a few weeks,” said NSA Head Coach Jimmy McGregor after the Rebels have seen their schedule dominated by six class 2A opponents.
However, despite suffering a 44-22 road loss to 2A member Delta Academy of Marks last Friday, this week’s district opponent will be yet another stiff test for the Rebels.
Last Friday night, the Warriors fell by a 44-12 margin to a strong 6-1 Briarfield Academy team from Lake Providence, Louisiana. That game was the first of three consecutive games Deer Creek School has played against an out-of-state opponent and the Warriors have claimed one win among them; a 38-28 decision over Lee Academy of Marianna, Arkansas.
Historically, NSA and Deer Creek School have not played each other since 2009 and the Warriors own a 5-1 series edge over the Rebels since the 2004 season.
In last Friday’s loss to Delta Academy, the Rebels found themselves down by a 30-6 margin at halftime; a deficit found to be too large to overcome.
Jacob Henley scored two of NSA’s three touchdowns as the junior running back broke away en route to a 35 yard and a 60 yard scoring run.
Fellow junior Riley Johnson also posted points on the scoreboard with his 15 yard run to paydirt while Dakota Dawson contributed a two point conversion run.
