A team doesn’t make it to the playoffs for two consecutive years without having a number of standout players.
That can certainly be said for the Tigers of Thomas E. Edwards Senior High, and this team will be looking to make it back to the postseason for the third straight year.
Leading the team, will be senior quarterback Joseph Perez, who seems to be in great football shape after a summer of working out and conditioning.
“He’s had a good summer,” said Tiger Head Coach Damaris Mitchell. “He’s gotten stronger and picked up a little size in the weight room, and we’re proud of what he’s done, and we’re looking forward to him doing what we know he can do.”
Perez has been at the helm of the Tiger offense for some time, leading the team to a 6-4 record in 2018.
For his career, he has 1,990 total passing yards, 23 touchdown passes, averaging around 19 yards per completion, according to MaxPreps.
“It’s been amazing,” Perez said during Monday drills. “We just continue going hard and competing every year.”
Perez said the goal this season is to remain competitive in a tough district.
“We need to go in and compete and make sure everybody is all together and just have fun,” he said.
The Ruleville native said he’s trying to be the team leader in 2019, with hopes of getting the Tigers all the way to the state championship game.
“I’m looking forward to a better season coming up and trying to make the run,” he said.
For Mitchell, Perez is rising to the occasion, leading what appears to be a strong and well-coached team in 2019.
“He’s doing everything we’re expecting him to do,” he said. “He’s becoming more of a team leader.”
The Tigers start at Rosa Fort on Friday night.
