Following a pair of baseball victories in three games leading up to the Spring Break week, the Gentry High Rams will return to the playing field Monday when they host Amanda Elzy High in a 4 p.m. non-regional match-up.
Owning a 3-2, 1-0 record thus far in this young season, the Rams’ recent efforts were highlighted by last Friday’s 19-1 Region 3-4A decision over Greenwood High School.
Additional action featured a 9-8 win over visiting Leland High last Saturday while last Thursday yielded a 5-1 road loss to Shelby Broadstreet High School.
In their win over Greenwood High, it only required three innings for the Rams to claim their game over the Bulldogs.
Using nine hits to help plate their 19 runs, the Rams received base hits from seven different players as they followed an eight run first inning with an 11-run second frame.
Leading the Gentry High hitting attack in this contest was senior Kelvin Moton, whose two singles helped drive a pair of runs across the plate.
Also drilling two singles was junior Maleek Galvin while senior Kylon Bush hammered a double against the Bulldogs’ pitching staff.
On the mound, Kelvun Moton claimed the win.
The senior allowed but one hit to the Bulldogs while striking out eight batters and walking one.
During last Saturday’s non-regional victory over Leland High School, the Rams held off a late-game rally by the Cubs to earn the one run win.
While pitchers Darryl McCray and Kelvun Moton combined to limit the Leland High lineup to a pair of hits, they also accumulated 12 strikeouts while issuing 10 base on balls.
Leading the Rams in the batter’s box was Galvin with a pair of singles and RBI’s.
Contributing an additional pair of singles to the Rams’ offensive effort was eighth grader Troy Griffin.
