Perhaps an open date is just what is needed by the Gentry High Rams football team.
With only one regular season game remaining to play and a playoff berth unlikely, the Rams will take the week off to heal and get prepared for their November 1 home-field clash with Rosa Fort High of Tunica.
Last Friday night, the Rams saw their playoff hopes grow dimmer after suffering a 32-16 road loss to Yazoo City High School.
In that contest, the Rams avoided a shutout in the second quarter of play when Tyler Edwards dashed over from five yards out.
This score was then followed by a two point conversion pass from Joshujuan Townsend to Marcus Stubbs.
Returning to the field at halftime facing a 20-8 deficit, the Rams tallied their final touchdown of the night when Eric McGowan grabbed an Indians fumble and raced 92 yards to paydirt.
Troy Griffin crashed over for the two point conversion as the game moved to its ultimate 32-16 final score.
Offensively, the Rams rushed 35 times for 241 yards in this game against the Indians’ defense.
Leading this attack was Townsend with 105 yards earned on 16 carries while Edwards rushed nine times for 57 yards.
Gabrien Coulter was close behind as his six efforts into the line netted 53 yards.
Through the air, Townsend’s eight completions accumulated 81 yards.
Stubbs pulled in three of those passes for 36 yards while Adrian Liggins’ four catches added another 37 yards to the Rams’ offensive efforts.
Defensively, Armale Oneal’s five solo, four assist night of play paced the Rams.
However, McGowan added five solos and three assists to his fumble recovery run for a touchdown.
Adding five solos and two assists apiece were Michael Beckworth, Edwards, and OJ Liddell.
Liddell also recovered one Yazoo City fumble as well as posting a quarterback sack.
