The road to winning football games is not getting any easier for the Gentry High Rams football team.
While opening their Region 3-4A district play this Friday night, the Rams also have the unenviable task of traveling to Greenwood High School to take on the state’s top-ranked 4A team.
Owning a perfect 6-0 record thus far this season, the Bulldogs will put that record on the line against the 2-4 Rams.
Last Friday night, the Rams suffered their second consecutive shutout after dropping a turnover plagued 29-0 road decision to 3A member and now 4-2 Byhalia High School.
Meanwhile, during that same night of high school football action, the Greenwood High Bulldogs were mauling Noxubee County High of Macon by a 40-14 margin.
Showcasing a high-powered offense, the Greenwood squad has been prolific and has scored less than 40 points in any one game only once thus far this season.
Historically, the Rams are hoping to break the 10-game losing streak they have suffered to the Bulldogs after last year’s game ended with Greenwood High on top by a 50-0 score. That 2018 season was very successful for the Bulldogs as their final 11-3 season ended with a 4A playoff semi-final loss to eventual state champion Louisville High School.
In last Friday’s road loss to Byhalia High School, the Rams saw their offensive efforts thwarted by two fumbles and four pass interceptions.
Taking advantage of the opportunities, the Indians found the end zone twice in the first quarter and once again in the second period to take a commanding 22-0 lead to the dressing room at halftime.
Although the Rams’ defense limited the Byhalia squad to only a third quarter touchdown in the second half, scoring points did not happen for the Gentry High offense again this night.
Offensively, quarterback Joshujuan Townsend completed five passes for 112 yards and Adrian Liggins paced the Rams’ receivers with two catches for 42 yards.
Also pulling in two passes was Brian Reed. Xavius Lewis’ one reception picked up another 41 yards of offense.
On the ground, the Rams rushed 18 times for 116 yards and Tyler Edwards’ nine carries accumulated 61 yards of offense.
