Making the most of their playing opportunities, the Gentry High Rams baseball team found a playable field last Saturday and opened their season by splitting a doubleheader.
Although the Rams initially were a 10-2 loss to Humphreys County High in Belzoni, Head Coach Timothy Holmes’ team rebounded in the second game by claiming a 13-3 three inning decision.
As for their upcoming playing schedule, a busy weekend of baseball is planned.
While today will find the Rams at Shelby Broadstreet High for a 4 p.m. contest, Friday will bring Greenwood High School to the Gentry High field for a 4 p.m. first pitch.
The final game scheduled to be played prior to Spring Break will occur this Saturday on the Gentry High field when the Leland High Cubs visit. Game time is 11 a.m.
In their victory over Humphreys County High, the Rams used four hits, eight stolen bases, and 11 walks issued by the Cowboys’ pitching staff to help accumulate their double digit run total.
While pitchers Tykereus Potts and Kelvun Moton combined to limit the Cowboys to one hit in the short game, catcher Earl Liddell led the Rams’ offensive efforts with a pair of singles.
Also contributing to the Gentry High cause with a single apiece were eighth graders Troy Griffin and Elijah Powers.
In their loss, the Rams found themselves in an early 5-0 hole after the first inning and were unable to overcome the deficit.
Leading the efforts in the batter’s box with a single apiece were Kylon Bush, Troy Griffin, Liddell, and Hakeem Shaffer.
On the mound, although limiting the Cowboys to six hits, Moton and starter Darryl McCray fell prey to six fielding errors while issuing a combined nine walks in this initial outing of the new season.
