The postseason has now begun.
Taking a 23-5 basketball record into Wednesday night’s clash with Clarksdale High School, the Gentry High Rams were also taking their first step into the 2019-20 state playoff competition.
The results of that Region 3-4A Tournament action taking place at Greenwood High were unavailable at press-time.
However, should the No. 2 seeded Rams have defeated the No. 3 seeded Wildcats, Gentry Head Coach Chico Potts’ squad will return to Greenwood this Friday to play for the top spot in the region. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m.
A Gentry High loss Wednesday night would send the Rams into Friday’s consolation game which is set to begin at 5 p.m.
Once those top four regional seedings have been established, the Rams will move on to next Tuesday’s first round of the State 4A playoffs.
Serving as the competition in this opening round will be one of the top four teams representing Region 1-4A; a group which is also battling this week to determine their own postseason seeding.
While the higher seed of each game will serve as the home team in first-round action, the Rams will play either Corinth High, New Albany High, North Pontotoc High of Ecru, or Tishomingo High of Iuka.
The New Albany High squad is currently ranked as the No. 2 seed among all 4A teams in the state.
Meanwhile, this past Friday night saw the Rams end their regular season schedule on their home court and on a positive note.
Handing the Shaw High Eagles a 64-49 loss, the Rams used a 34-20 halftime lead to help earn their 15-point win.
Leading the scoring for the Rams in this game with 17 points was sophomore Deandre Brisco while fellow sophomore Christopher Minton added a dozen points to the Rams’ scoring efforts.
Also grabbing 10 rebounds in this contest was senior David Windfield.
