The State 4A baseball playoffs are now set to begin.
As a reward for making the postseason, a long trip to New Hope High School will be had this Friday by the Gentry High Rams for a 1 p.m. doubleheader against the Trojans.
Taking a 5-10, 2-6 record and a Region 4 number four seed into this postseason twinbill, the Rams will be taking on a New Hope High squad which claimed the Region 1 championship while accumulating a 17-5 record.
Should a third game be necessary, the Rams will play host to the Trojans at 1 p.m. this Saturday.
The winner of this current three game series will then move on next week to play this week’s victor of the Caledonia-Corinth High School match-up. Game dates and times are to be announced.
Most recently Tuesday evening, the Rams took on Tunica Rosa Fort High and suffered a 12-5 regional loss.
Other action this past week netted the Rams one regional victory in three games after they claimed a 9-4 decision over visiting Greenwood High last Friday.
Facing a 4-0 deficit, the Rams erupted in the third inning for six runs and then tacked on three more insurance runs in the fifth frame to earn the win.
On the mound, Darryl McCray’s complete game five inning performance surrendered four hits while striking out five batters and walking nine more.
At the plate, the Rams collected nine hits off the Bulldogs’ pitching staff. This effort was led by a pair of singles off the bats of Earl Liddell and Kelvun Moton.
In other action last Wednesday, the Rams dropped a doubleheader to region champion Yazoo City High School; but not before throwing a scare into the Indians.
In a high-scoring opening game, the Rams would come up just short as Yazoo City escaped with a 14-13 victory.
When all was said and done, the Indians coupled seven hits with six Gentry High errors to help plate their runs.
Meanwhile, the Rams tallied their baker’s dozen scoring effort as Troy Griffin (double and single) and Tykereus Potts (2 singles) paced their team while in the batter’s box.
In the nightcap, the Rams fell by an 11-3 score as the Indians’ eight hits helped push their double digit number of runs in to score.
Offensively, the Rams could only muster a single by Potts in this outing.
