Off to an impressive start and with a large tournament looming to host Saturday at Chism Park, the 6-1 Indianola Academy Lady Colonels fast-pitch softball team is competing hard to continue its winning ways.
The IA squad will trot onto its home field at 6 p.m. today to take on a strong Humphreys Academy squad from Belzoni.
Meanwhile, the Lady Colonels will begin Saturday’s tournament play at 9 a.m. versus Sharkey-Issaquena Academy of Rolling Fork. The IA squad will then quickly take the field again at 10:15 a.m. with Central Hinds Academy of Raymond serving as their next pool play competition.
There will be 12 teams from throughout the Delta and beyond competing in the one-day tournament at Chism Park. The competition will feature pool play to be followed by single-elimination bracket play.
In addition to IA, Central Hinds, and SIA, other teams participating in this tournament include Central Holmes Christian School of Lexington, Humphreys Academy of Belzoni, Kirk Academy of Grenada, Lee Academy of Clarksdale, St. Aloysius High School of Vicksburg, St. Joseph High School of Greenville, Washington School of Greenville, Winona Christian School and Winston Academy of Louisville.
Additional softball play continues Monday when the Lady Colonels open their District 1AAA competition by hosting Lee Academy. First pitch of this important game is to be thrown at 6 p.m.
It has been a busy week of softball for the Lady Colonels as IA Head Coach Patrick Davis’ squad followed Friday’s 14-2 road victory over Washington School with a second-place finish in Saturday’s tournament hosted by Winona Christian School.
Opening that tournament action with a 3-1 decision over the host team, the Lady Colonels then defeated Kirk Academy and Winston Academy by 9-0 and 8-5 scores, respectively, to earn their berth in the championship game. The pitching trio of Jill Roberts, Mary Linton Davis, and Katie Ann Page turned in complete game victories in each of their games pitched.
However, in a hard-fought contest, the IA girls ultimately fell to a talented Central Holmes Academy squad by a 4-2 score in the final.
Then, the Lady Colonels earned a Monday road trip victory over Carroll Academy by a 14-1 score and followed with an 18-1 pummeling of visiting Greenville Christian School on Tuesday evening in Indianola.
