A strong effort by the Tigers of Thomas E. Edwards Sr. High School came up short in frustrating fashion last Friday night.
Taking on the Lions of Rosa Fort High School in Tunica, the Tigers from Ruleville saw their 2019 season opening football game end with a 20-8 loss.
This decision was absorbed despite the Tigers’ defense giving up only one offensive touchdown to the 4A member Lions.
The Rosa Fort squad earned their game-deciding points by way of an 86 yard pass interception for a touchdown and a 40 yard scoring run of a fumble recovery.
“We played well, especially on defense”, said Edwards High Head Coach Damaris Mitchell. “We made a lot of simple mistakes which hurt, but we’ll correct those and move on.”
Moving on for the Tigers involves taking part in this Friday’s Unity Bowl versus cross-county foe Gentry High School.
The Tigers will be hosting Gentry High in a 7 p.m. clash between two teams looking for their first win of the young season.
Gentry High’s Rams saw their season begin last Saturday with a 28-20 home-field loss to Greenville High School.
Last season, the Tigers dropped their second consecutive game to the Rams in a heart-stopping 8-0 game.
That victory by Gentry High was only one of two the Rams would earn during last season’s 2-9 campaign.
Overall, Gentry High owns a 12-3 series edge since the 2004 season.
In last Friday’s loss to Rosa Fort High, the Tigers scored their lone TD in the second quarter.
The touchdown was earned by way of a 44 yard pass from quarterback Joseph Perez to Robert Parker, Jr.
Perez then connected with Phabian Carter on a two point conversion pass play to close out the Tigers’ scoring in this game.
