A determined effort fell short and a football season has come to an end.
Such was the case for the Thomas E. Edwards Tigers last Friday night as a 28-12 road loss to Choctaw County High in Ackerman brought their 2019 campaign to an end.
This first round 3A playoff loss left the Tigers owning a 4-7 record while the Chargers will take their 9-3 record into the second round of the playoffs against Water Valley High School.
The Tigers did not go quietly in this contest, however, as the first half of play ended with Head Coach Damaris Mitchell’s squad facing a narrow 14-12 deficit.
“We played well early but we just did not finish drives and made some critical mistakes at critical times in the game,” said Coach Mitchell.
As for what is to come in future days, Coach Mitchell noted “Hopefully, the younger kids will see the importance of finishing off drives and paying attention to details. I feel good about the future of our program.”
In their loss to Choctaw County, the Tigers recorded their first touchdown of the night in the first quarter when quarterback Joseph Perez connected with Ja’Kell Allen with a 15 yard scoring pass.
With what would prove to be the Tigers’ final touchdown of the 2019 season, Perez then crashed over from three yards away in the second quarter of the contest.
There were 18 Tigers closing out their high school football participation in Ackerman last Friday night.
This lengthy list of seniors who reached the playoffs in each season of their varsity career include JonKevius Abrams, Kendrick Austin, Phabian Carter, Kyndarius Clark, Lorenzo Cotton, Jr., Omarian De’Jesus, Ja’Marcus Glenn, Derrick James, Edward Jones, Antonio Lewis, Trevor Long, Zalin Matthews, Xavier Murry, Joseph Perez, Jaa’fre Ramiz, Timothy Shaw, Adrian Smith, and Jeremiah Surney.
