The second season, also known as the playoffs, has now arrived for the Thomas E. Edwards Senior High Tigers football team.
Along with that arrival is a trip this Friday from Ruleville to Ackerman where a 7 p.m. kickoff against the Choctaw County High Chargers will begin the Tigers’ participation in the State 3A playoffs.
Having earned their fourth playoff berth in four years, the Region 3-3A No. 4 seeded 4-7 Tigers will face a Choctaw County squad which brings a Region 4-3A championship, as well as an 8-3 record, into the game.
“They are a pretty good team,” said Edwards High Head Coach Damaris Mitchell. “We match up well with them, but it is going to come down to execution. Regular season records do not mean anything at this point of the season.”
Choctaw County High enters this Friday’s game riding a six game win streak, a run which was enhanced by last Friday’s 31-7 drubbing of Hatley High School.
Additionally, the Chargers are ranked No. 4 among all 3A teams as well as No. 10 in Mississippi Gridiron’s Little 10 ranking.
The Chargers’ losses have come at the hands of Winona High, Calhoun City, and East Webster High School; three playoff bound schools which have collectively accumulated a 24-6 thus far this season.
The Chargers and the Tigers last met on a football field in the second round of the 2017 playoffs and the Ackerman school earned a 31-0 victory.
Meanwhile, in their most recent action last Friday night the Tigers closed out their 2019 regular season schedule with a 35-7 road loss to Winona High School.
In this contest, Edwards High avoided a shutout in the first period when quarterback Joseph Perez connected with Shemar Nevells on a 25-yard touchdown pass. Jeremiah Surney’s PAT kick then split the uprights for the Tigers’ final point of the night.
Unfortunately, Winona High’s Tigers were in the process of building a 21-7 halftime lead and then cruised on to their eighth victory of the season.
