In tribute to the late Lt. Ozie Carter, the Indianola Board of Aldermen has decided to rename the 300 block of Second Street “Lt. Ozie Carter Way.”
Carter passed away two weeks ago after a long illness.
Police Chief Ronald Sampson addressed the board during this past Monday night’s meeting, and with a heavy heart asked that the street be renamed.
“I think it would be more than the right thing to do to name that 300 block after him,” Sampson said, at one point coming to tears over the loss of his friend and his officer. “He gave his all to this city, coached ball, hung with the kids, and kept us together. I am asking the board
to honor him.”
The board did vote unanimously to rename that part of the street near the Indianola Police Department building after Carter.
Mayor Ken Featherstone reminded the board and those in attendance that Carter’s funeral is set for this Saturday.
“Expect high traffic on B.B. King Saturday. If you can, avoid going that way – due to the traffic,” he said.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, at Gentry High School. The burial will follow at Riverside Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday Nov. 1, at Byas Funeral Home, Indianola, which is in charge of arrangements.
