MACCC play has begun and the Mississippi Delta Community College Trojans, 7-7 overall and 0-1 MACCC, on Monday, January 13, fell on the road to the Hinds Eagles (8-8 overall and 1-0 in MACCC) 81-73. Davion Traylor led the team with 28 points but was limited due to foul trouble and an injury.
“He got into foul trouble and he rolled his ankle with about seven minutes left in the game. He had 20 points in the first half,” Mississippi Delta Community College Head Coach Derrick Fears said. “But he was at practice on Tuesday.”
Without an outside scoring threat, Coach Fears said the Eagles played a zone defense and “packed the paint around Davion. We’re tough to guard man-to-man but when they get in the zone, we don’t shoot it well.”
Javion Smith injured his knee in the game and was out of practice.
The Trojans faced Itawamba Thursday (not covered due to press time) and then on Tuesday, January 21, they’ll travel to take on the Meridian Eagles.
“Itawamba just beat (nationally ranked) #7 Jones, 92-79 (at Itawamba.) Itawamba's kind of an up-and-down team. They've got about seven or eight guys that score double figures. It’s going to be one of the games we may have to work on tempo and kind of slow them down a little bit and make sure that we really execute our offense well,” Coach Fears said.
