A judge for the state’s Fourth Circuit Court District has ruled that the two brothers charged in connection with the 2021 murder of an Indianola businesswoman are mentally competent to stand trial.
Judge Richard A. Smith issued separate orders for Daquarius Wright and Kenterius Wright following forensic psychological evaluations.
Both brothers were arrested in April 2021 in connection with the shooting death of Jamie Iverson, a well-known local businesswoman, during an attempted robbery at Paul’s Jewelry in Indianola. They were taken into custody in the Jackson-metro area by the U.S. Marshals Service shortly after the incident and later transferred to Sunflower County, where the case is being tried.
In an separate order signed Feb. 23 and filed Feb. 25, the judge found Daquarius Wright competent to proceed. The ruling relied on an April 4, 2025, evaluation by W. Criss Lott, Ph.D., who reported that Daquarius Wright has a rational understanding of the legal process, can confer with his lawyer, understands the charges and potential penalties, and does not require further treatment or evaluation to assist in his defense.
Last year, Kenterius Wright had also been found competent to stand trial in an order signed June 9, 2025, and filed June 12, 2025. He was evaluation by forensic psychologist R.M. Storer, Ph.D., who concluded that he was mentally competent in a report dated July 2, 2024.
Both brothers remain in custody at the Sunflower County Jail, where bond is set at $1 million each. The District Attorney’s office has previously announced its intent to seek the death penalty. With competency now resolved for both defendants, the Fourth Circuit Court District is expected to set trial dates in the coming months.
