In the third week of the 2025 legislative session, the Mississippi Senate met on Monday, January 20 – the deadline for introducing general bills and constitutional amendments. Senators continued to review agency funding requests during Appropriations subcommittee meetings.
On Monday, January 20, the Senate passed Senate Resolution 7, urging Allen Media Broadcasting of Los Angeles, California, to retain the in-house weather reporting services of WTVA, Channel 9, in Tupelo. Allen Media Broadcasting announced plans to replace WTVA’s meteorology team with a remote weather reporting service. Senators emphasized the value of WTVA’s services to the community.
On Thursday, January 23, the Senate Agriculture Committee convened to discuss the state of Mississippi’s farm industry. The discussion focused on projected crop production, challenges faced by farmers, and strategies to improve profitability and increase the number of farmers in the state.
The Senate now faces a February 4 deadline for committees to report general bills and constitutional amendments originating in the Senate.
For the House, the third week of the 2025 legislative session has been productive, with committees working diligently to shape the legislative priorities of the year.
On Monday, January 20, the House reached a critical milestone with the deadline for introducing general bills and constitutional amendments. This deadline ensures that the legislative process moves forward with focus and efficiency. Committees, including Youth and Family Affairs, chaired by Rep. Otis Anthony, are now fully engaged in reviewing proposals, hosting hearings, and discussing ways to address pressing issues such as child welfare, education, and family services.
Several important bills moved forward this week, passing the House and heading to the Senate for further action. These measures reflect the state legislature's collective commitment to making Mississippi a better place to live and work for families, youth, and future generations.
Looking ahead, the House approaches another significant deadline – Tuesday, February 4 – when committees must report on general bills and constitutional amendments originating in their respective houses. This means the coming weeks will be critical as they refine and advance policies that matter most to constituents.
