William Dean Belk Jr., affectionately known as "Big Dean” and “Daddy Deano" passed away peacefully in his home on May 16, 2025, at the age of 86 in Indianola, MS. Born on October 6, 1938, in Memphis, TN, to William Dean Belk and May Earl Sneed Belk, Dean lived a life marked by dedication to his family, profession, and community.
Dean grew up in Holly Springs, MS, and Clarksdale, MS, before pursuing higher education at the University of Mississippi. He graduated with a B.A. in 1960 and earned his Juris Doctor degree in 1965. During his time at Ole Miss, he was a proud member of the Phi Delta Theta Social Fraternity and Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity. His commitment to his profession was evident through his roles as Indianola City Attorney, past President of the Sunflower County Bar Association and Commissioner of the MS Bar Association (1995-1996), and Fellow of the MS Bar Foundation.
Dean served his country honorably in the United States Army in Korea, achieving the rank of Captain. His career as an attorney at Clark, Davis & Belk spanned 60 years, where he was known for his expertise and dedication.
A man of many talents and interests, Dean was a master meat smoker, who will be fondly remembered in the community for delivering his culinary creations in times of need and support. He was also an avid golfer and fisherman, and a little league baseball coach. He was an enthusiastic participant in the local Mid-Delta Arts Association’s Brindley Theater, where he found joy and camaraderie in the musical aspect of bringing stories to life on stage. He was a devoted member of the Indianola First Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir and served on the board. He also contributed to the community as a board member of the Henry M. Seymour Library and an active member and past President of the Indianola Rotary Club.
Dean was predeceased by his beloved wife, Ann Elizabeth Middleton Belk, with whom he shared 55 wonderful years of marriage. They were married on November 24, 1966, in Indianola, MS. He is survived by his son, Dean Belk III, of Phoenix, AZ, along with his wife Kristi and their children, Jackson and Hudson and his daughter, Elizabeth Belk, of Atlanta, GA. He was a beloved father and a beacon of unconditional love to his children, always guiding them with wisdom and compassion.
A memorial service to celebrate Dean’s life will be held on Monday, May 19th at 2:00 pm at the First Methodist Church in Indianola. His legacy as a loving father, dedicated professional, and cherished community member will be remembered by all who knew him.
