The Indianola Board of Aldermen voted to install no parking signs on the south side of West Gresham Street to ease traffic congestion during school drop-off and pick-up times.
The decision comes after Ward 1 Alderman Gary Fratesi raised concerns about parked vehicles on the south side of the street, causing traffic flow problems. Though the new parking restrictions may deter some residents from parking on the streets, the board hopes the move will improve traffic flow and ensure the safety of students and pedestrians.
Public Works Director Elvis Pernell estimated that the distance covered by the no parking signs would be about 380 feet. He believes it will significantly improve conditions for school buses and parents picking up kids.
“It would be a big asset to the school buses that come down in the morning and the parents picking up kids,” Pernell said.
Ward 5 Alderman Sam Brock Jr. expressed concern about opening a battleground on one-way streets and the potential issues that may arise when Gentry reopens completely. The board voted in favor of no parking on the south side of West Gresham from 7 am to 9 am and 2 pm to 4 pm.
