The Indianola Academy Colonels baseball team may be getting hot at a very critical time.
While riding a four-game win streak, the Colonels are now about to enter a lengthy stretch of District 2-4A play.
This string of all-important contests begin next Tuesday when the Colonels take their 6-4 record into a double header clash with Greenville St. Joseph High School.
While first pitch is set to be thrown in Greenville at 4 p.m., this twinbill is the first of twelve consecutive district contests which will consume the IA schedule in the coming days.
Additional action occurs next Thursday when the Fighting Irish visit the IA field for a 4:30 p.m. series-ending contest.
In the Colonels’ most recent action played Tuesday evening, Coach Scooter Prince’s squad earned 8-1 and 6-2 victories over Greenville Christian School and Tunica Academy respectively.
Playing this double header at Riverside High in Avon, the Colonels used effective pitching and timely hits to sweep their Spring Break doubleheader.
In their opening game with Greenville Christian School, the Colonels received a strong two-hit pitching performance from Weston Farmer (1-1).
In this four-inning game, Farmer limited the Saints to only a third inning run while striking out six batters and walking none.
At the plate, the Colonels’ four hit attack was led by a Liam Ledbetter double.
In IA’s 6-2 decision over Tunica Academy, another strong pitching effort was had; on this occasion by Ledbetter.
Ledbetter kept his pitching record spotless (3-0) with a four-hitter which yielded two earned runs, two strike outs, and only one base on balls.
Offensively, the Colonels also accumulated four hits and it was Tyler Alford who paced the effort. The junior’s double and single would drive four runs across the plate.
Meanwhile, last Saturday at St. Aloysius High School in Vicksburg the Colonels swept the Flashes to begin IA’s current four-game win streak.
The Colonels used 14 hits in this day’s play to help plate their runs; a productive day which evolved into 10-8 and 14-5 victories over the 5A member Flashes.
In the opener, a seven-run outburst in the second inning fueled the IA win. Although St. Al responded with a six-run rally in the third frame, the Colonels held onto their two-run victory.
Leading the hitting for IA in this game was Walker Perkins with his double and a single.
On the mound, eighth grader Ty Killebrew picked up the win as his 3.1 innings of work yielded zero runs on two hits while striking out three and walking one.
In the nightcap, the Colonels struck for 10 hits; but it was a nine run seventh inning which broke open a 5-5 game.
Pacing IA’s offense was Alford and Ledbetter, both of whom delivered a double and a single apiece.
Also contributing a double to IA’s offensive efforts was Conner Roncali.
Alford picked up the win on the mound as his six inning performance allowed four runs on seven hits.
He also struck out eight St. Al batters while walking only two.
