The City of Drew has a new alderwoman in Ward 1.
Tierra Fountain defeated Nathan Moore during Tuesday’s special election to fill out the term for the late Ben Alexander.
Alexander had served as Ward 1 alderman for seven and a half years until his death late last year.
Meanwhile, incumbent Mayor Melanie Townsend has filed to run again as the city’s leader. She will run as a Democrat.
Regina Stone has filed to run for the mayor’s seat in Drew as a Independent.
Incumbent Ward 2 Alderman Jerome Shaw has filed for a reelection bid as a Democrat.
Hazel Harris, incumbent Alderman-at-Large, will run for that seat again.
In the Ruleville municipal election, incumbent Mayor Michael Clark, an Independent, has filed to run again. Jolene Davis-Cannon, an Independent, has also filed for that race.
Incumbent Ward 1 Alderman Tommy Boykin has filed to run again as a Democrat.
Rickey Scott, a Democrat, has also filed to run in Ward 1.
Incumbent Dorothy Robinson, a Democrat, has filed run for Ward 2 Alderman again.
Willie B. Nevills, a Democrat, has filed to challenge that seat.
In Ward 3, Marvin Hawkins and Levester Moton have both filed to run as Democrats.
In Ward 4, Willie L. Robinson, a Democrat, has filed to run for that seat.
For Alderman-At-Large, incumbent Billy Marlow will run again as a Democrat.
Evett “Mr. Fugee” Wilson will run against Marlow as an Independent.
In the Indianola municipal election, one person has turned in papers for office.
Rodreigus Young has filed to run as Ward 5 Alderman.
That seat is currently held by Sam Brock Jr.
No other candidates had filed as of press time.
Qualifying for the regular election cycle began on Jan. 2 and will last through Jan. 31 for the county’s municipalities, with the exception of the City of Indianola, which is on a special charter.
Indianola’s qualifying period will run through Aug. 25.
All other municipalities will have their primary elections on April 1, primary runoffs on April. 22, general election on June 3 and new terms begin on July 1.
Indianola’s primary will be October 14, 2025.
