Someone will earn their first football victory of the season tonight.
For local fans, the hope is that it will be the Thomas Edwards High Tigers who will improve upon their 0-4 record.
That opportunity will occur today at 7 p.m. with a road-trip clash against the 5A member Greenville High School Hornets.
Meanwhile, the home-standing Hornets will also come into this game with the Tigers hungry for a win as they own an 0-3 record.
Interestingly, both of tonight’s competitors also suffered shutout losses last Friday night to undefeated teams.
While the Tigers from Ruleville fell by a 40-0 margin to 2-0 Hollandale Simmons High School, the Hornets suffered their fate by a 16-0 margin to now 3-0 Greenwood High School.
The Hornets’ schedule has been challenging as they come into tonight’s game having played two undefeated teams (Greenwood and Northside High of Shelby); a situation which has contributed to the Hornets’ offensive woes which has generated only 21 points this far this season.
Ironically, it was the 2023 Edwards-Greenville clash which would earn the Tigers their first victory of that campaign.
That night’s play was an extremely exciting football game in which the Tigers earned a 19-18 overtime victory over the Hornets.
The Hornets would move on from that 2023 loss to post a 2-8 record.
Most recently in last Friday’s loss to Hollandale Simmons High, the Tigers faced a juggernaut Blue Devils squad apparently bent on completing a task left unfinished last year.
That 2023 campaign saw the Blue Devils reel off 11 straight victories before seeing their season end one game shy of playing in the State 1A semi-finals.
