Editor’s Note: Enterprise-Tocsin publisher Patrick Ervin asked Sunflower County Circuit Clerk, Carolyn P. Hamilton to inform the public about recent primary election. The Question and Answer format helps facilitate public education about primaries and the general election.
Who was on the ballot locally in Democratic and Republican Primaries?[CPH] This was the race for the US Congressional District 2. When you say locally, I think about Sunflower County. None of the candidates were from here.
What was the result of each primary?[CPH] Democrat: Jerry Kerner- 43, Bennie Thompson 1601
[CPH] Republican: Michael Carson -48, Ronald Eller -66, Brian Flowers-102, Stanford Johnson-10. These are Sunflower County totals only.
If the outcome isn't official, when will it be certified?[CPH] Friday June 17th is the deadline for certification. Because this is a state district race, all counties must have their certification filed with the Secretary of State before it can be officially certified for the 2nd Congressional District.
What were the challenges that you incurred?[CPH] One of our precincts had to be re-located, due to unavailability and another precinct did not inform the County Election officials that they were dismantling the area where we normally conduct our elections and we had to move to another area at that precinct.
[CPH]
What went well?[CPH] All 17 precincts were open at 7am ready for voters and I did not receive any calls from the poll managers.
How did the voter turnout compare to past primaries?[CPH] This voter turnout for THIS election is what I expected from the history of voter turnout from previous years. There was not a lot of media coverage nor campaign literature visible.
When is the General Election?[CPH] November 8, 2022
Is there time to register for the General Election?[CPH] Deadline to register is 30 days prior to the next election. October 10, 2022 is the deadline for the November Election.
If so, how and where can someone register? [CPH] They can register at any city hall as well at the Circuit Clerk’s office. Applications are available at my office for anyone wishing to sponsor a voter registration drive. A voter does not have to be in the presence of the clerk to register. Applications must be received or postmarked by the deadline date of Oct. 10th to be eligible to vote on November 8th
Is there anything you'd like to add about the importance of primary elections? [CPH] I think all elections are important. Primary Election is a process that enable voters to choose their party’s candidate for the general election. Only one person per party is advanced to the general election. Voting in the primary election is vital to the success of the candidate of your choice and the only way to give that person that opportunity, you must vote in the primary election. Often time we assume the strongest candidate will advance to the general election and are surprised when they did not win the primary. Your vote matters and your vote count!
