This is an age-old question that I have heard many, many times. All of us that walk on this earth think that we can escape the wrath of God because we have little and big sins and we make the call. People I want to tell you that sin is sin and it doesn’t matter the size of it.
As I was working in my yard the other day I didn’t realize that some very small ants had crawled on my shoe and eventually on my leg. These were the tiniest of ants and I didn’t notice them until one bit my leg. I want you to know it hurt and I had to drop what I was doing and get those ants off my leg and shoe.
You may wonder why I am correlating these small ants to small sins. These tiny ants caused me pain and I had to do something to rid them from keeping on hurting me. Once I had cleaned and doctored the ant bites I was able to go on working without the pain. I didn’t forget about what they had done to me and kept a watch on where I was stepping to avoid the same thing happening again.
This is the same with any sin, small or big on our comparison table. It really doesn’t matter because sin is sin. That small white lie we tell, the excessive speed we drive breaking the law, taking something that doesn’t belong to us, saying something about someone that may or may not be true but we had to share it, doesn’t seem to be anything major but can cause irreparable damage.
The great Billy Graham was asked “What is Sin? Are all sins equal in God’s eyes? His answer was “A sin is any thought or action that falls short of God’s Will. God is perfect, and anything we do that falls short of His perfection is sin.” He went on to say that “Even when we aren’t aware of it, we commit sin by the things we do (or fail to do), or by the way we think.” In Romans 6:23 it says, “For the wages of sin is death…”, applies to all sin, whether in thought, word, or deed.
Even though many of us think that a small sin is better than a big sin we need to remember that even though there may be different degrees of sin, sin is sin. There is no way around it and the only way that we can rid ourselves of sin is to have Jesus in our hearts and ask Him to forgive us. He paid the penalty of all our sins when He gave Himself to be crucified on the cross. All we have to do is accept Him as our Savior and Lord and repent of our sins and He will forgive us.
I was reminded real-quick that a small ant can bite you and the pain can be as excruciating as when a big fire ant bites you. It doesn’t matter the size of the ant when the results are the same. The same holds true with sin. What we think is small in our eyes is not the same with God. When we take our eyes off of Jesus and go with the world then sin is going to weigh us down until we ask Jesus for forgiveness.
