Having bird feeders around your property can be a huge reward and an afternoon conversation piece.
A few weeks ago we talked about feeding hummingbirds but did not mention other species that many homeowners love to watch.
Just like any other species birds tend to dine where they feel comfortable and safe. This in turn lets you put feeders out in areas that are visible, since they can fly from most predators.
However there is one problem with most locations, squirrels.
These guys are just as enjoyable to watch as the birds but the amount of feed they eat when you are not intending to feed them can become a problem.
Even if you hang the feeder from a tiny cable and have it suspended in the air, a squirrel will show its acrobatic abilities and prove to you that it is an Olympic gold medalist in tight rope for free food.
So the question is what can I do to ensure that my birds get the feed?
Try erecting the feeder over a rose bush. As long as there is not a leaping chance to the feeder the squirrels will not find it worth the trouble to battle the thorns. Another option is to try to 'squirrel proof' your feeder.
You can attempt this by placing objects such as a baffle or tube, above and below the feeder making it difficult to get to the groceries. Changing the menu to safflower will help deter squirrels from dining in that area as they are not fond of them. Lastly, consider giving the squirrels there own restaurant.
It will not be difficult in weaning them off the bird feeder to their own feeder if you place it in their habitat; tree trunk or fence line.
However, keep in mind if they visit and there is nothing there to offer they will be going back to the old stomping ground no matter the difficulty.
Like always, Mother Nature gives us a twist. Once you begin feeding the squirrels you will find they will have some friends come visit the free food.
