Indianola’s ward races were heating up ahead of today’s filing deadline.
New candidates for the October 14 primary filed to run in Wards 2 and 3 this week.
Keith Spealman filed to run in Ward 2, which is currently held by Darrell Simpson, and Alan Blake Jr. filed to run in Ward 3, which is currently occupied by Ruben Woods.
The deadline to file for Indianola’s municipal races is today at 5 p.m.
Incumbent Ward 1 Alderman Gary Fratesi has filed to run for re-election. As of press time this week, he was the lone candidate in that ward.
Along with Spealman in Ward 2, Kendrick K. Carpenter and Robert L. Campbell plan to compete for that seat.
Incumbent Woods has filed to run for re-election in Ward 3.
Calvin Moton has filed to challenge Woods, as well as Sibyl Walker Buckner.
Johnny Phillips and Dana Myrick Jr. have filed to run for the Ward 4 alderman seat, which is currently held by Marvin Elder.
Incumbent Ward 5 Alderman Sam Brock Jr. has filed to run for re-election.
Rodreigus Young and Nakala Murry have also filed to run for the Ward 5 alderman seat.
Incumbent Mayor Ken Featherstone announced his bid for re-election and filed papers earlier in the year.
Former three-term mayor Steve Rosenthal filed last week to seek the mayor’s seat again.
Hollis Myrick has filed to run for mayor as well.
