Students at Gentry High recently joined the league of countless others across the nation who are reaching out to help Texas residents who were affected by Hurricane Harvey.
Lisa Boatwright, teacher and student government advisor at Gentry, coordinated the effort and said donations poured in from all over.
“The students, the community, it just spread throughout the whole community,” she said.
The school partnered with Sen. Willie Simmons, D-Cleveland, who organized an 18-wheeler tractor-trailer to deliver the goods to Texas. Sarita Simmons, daughter of the state senator said, “On behalf of the Senator’s Place and Senator Willie Simmons we are very grateful to be a part of this event, to be able to help the victims of Hurricane Harvey and it’s a pleasure to work with Gentry High School.”
Each grade level at the school was responsible for collecting different categories of items including water, non-perishable foods, personal hygiene items and clothing.
“We’re glad that we were able to help people in the time of need,” Boatwright said.
Volunteers came to the school on Friday to pick up the donated items. Gentry High head football coach Tavares Johnson and his players loaded the supplies into the backs of two pickup trucks to take them to Cleveland to be loaded onto a big rig and shipped to the Houston area. “
We want to say thank you to the community, Sunflower County, Bolívar County for being a part of this event,” Simmons said.
