Monday's Take: A lot to be happy about in my sports world

By Bryan Davis Publisher , READ MORE > 18,941 Reads

Since I only get to give my opinions once a week in print, I thought it would be a novel idea to launch a daily take on the website.

That is of course without writing a novel.

This space is going to be about local events, sports, politics and so forth. You never know what I’m going to talk about, and frankly, I might not either until I wake up on a given day.

This week, I’m going to start by being a bit of a Monday morning quarterback.

The worst news for Mississippi State fans this past weekend was not the stunning 28-7 defeat at the hands of Kentucky.

It’s the fact that Ole Miss emerged from the weekend with the exact same 3-1 record as the Bulldogs.

This was supposed to be the year that Mississippi State separated itself from the Landshark program to become a national title contender.

Unless State wins out, this will likely not be the case, and Ole Miss has something to look forward to in the last week of the season. A beatable Bulldogs squad.

As for the rest of my sports world, it was great to see Indianola Academy win a third consecutive game. The Colonels look as if they are on track to make their fourth trip to Jackson in as many years.

I’m hoping this weekend we’ll see the first win for North Sunflower Academy and further victories for Gentry and Ruleville.

My Atlanta Braves are headed to the playoffs for the first time since 2013. They played a flawless four-game series with the Phillies to clinch the division.

I have bought my tickets for the first playoffs home game at SunTrust Park.

The Saints outlasted division rival the Atlanta Falcons this week, an overtime win for the New Orleans squad.

This is three very close games in a row for the Saints, with one of them being a week one loss to Tampa Bay.

The Saints defense is going to have to improve in the secondary, and the team cannot continue to rely on Drew Brees throwing 300 to 400 yards each game to win.

If this continues, New Orleans will end up an eight or nine win team instead of a Super Bowl contender.
