Alright, you can probably pencil it in for the next several weeks.
Monday’s take is likely going to be some sort of Monday morning/afternoon quarterbacking article.
I’m not a huge football expert like my good friend Brandon Walker, who hosts the More Cowbell Show, but I will make my opinions known about what I observe in both college football and the NFL.
Brandon posed a question a couple of weeks ago on his show.
“Who has the most delusional fan base in the SEC?”
There were some folks who said Auburn, some said Tennessee and others pointed to the LSU fan base.
In recent history, both Mississippi SEC fan bases have had short-lived brushes with being delusional.
The most recent being Mississippi State’s loyal fans who thought they would be undefeated going into this year’s game with Alabama with a chance to compete for the SEC Championship and possibly a national championship trophy.
The 3-0 start against non-SEC opponents certainly fueled the smack talk going into the Kentucky game.
I count myself as one of those who said this was entirely possible.
The last couple of weeks have knocked us all back into reality.
The Bulldogs have lost to two SEC East opponents in Kentucky and Florida, and the offense has scored a single touchdown in those eight quarters of play.
Prior to 2018, Ole Miss had a run-in with delusional thoughts when the school twice defeated Alabama under then Head Coach Hugh Freeze.
The school had impressive teams both years, but they failed to make much noise in playoffs talk after each victory in 2014 and 2015, though they did take great pride in 2015 having beaten the eventual champions.
Since then, Ole Miss has endured seeing its coach and hero Freeze fired for impropriety and numerous scholarships revoked, as well as bowl bans for last season and this season.
Neither one of these programs should ever think it is ridiculous their schools could compete for a title.
Until that day comes, however, these recent and not so recent events remind us that the talk is just that. Talk.
State and Ole Miss have enjoyed great success over the past decade, with both programs winning consistently and making numerous bowl appearances and winning several of those games in the process.
Both programs should be proud, but the state needs to maintain a reputation of humility rather than gaining a reputation for being delusional.
