Stephanie (Blackmon) Lenoir, 34, 304 West Gresham St., Indianola, turned herself in to law enforcement officers on Wednesday and was promptly booked into the Sunflower County jail and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Lenoir was being sought as a person of interest in the July 28 shooting of 61-year-old Reola Carter of Sunflower. According to Sheriff James Haywood, even though the shooting happened on Sunday, Carter didn’t tell anyone about it until Tuesday when she had to call for medical attention due to the pain.
He said the ambulance service then notified the sheriff’s department of the bullet wound. When deputies responded, Lenoir was allegedly named as the suspect. Haywood said the shooting reportedly occurred outside of the Sunflower city limits.
Haywood said Carter told him that she had been nursing the injury herself for the two days because she was fearful that her children would try to retaliate if she told them and she didn’t want them to get into trouble.
Lenoir is scheduled to make her initial appearance before the judge on Thursday.
