Expectations are that a high quality and intense basketball game will be played in the Gentry High gym this Friday night.
For there will be two ranked basketball teams taking the court at 7 p.m. when the Rams, the top-ranked team among 4A schools, will do battle against the Jackson Callaway Chargers, who come into the game as the No. 3 ranked team in the 5A classification.
The 16-4 Chargers, who are also ranked No. 10 among all Mississippi schools, will take on a 20-2, 6-0 Gentry High squad which is riding a 10 game win streak.
This Friday’s non-regional contest against the Chargers will also end a five game run of home dates the Rams have enjoyed and will serve as a rematch against one of the only two teams that has defeated the highly successful Gentry squad this season. Callaway prevailed over the Rams by a 15 point margin in the two teams’ initial November 17 match-up.
Additional upcoming action this week includes non-regional competition as the Rams will be at Shaw High School this Saturday while next Tuesday will find Cleveland Central High School coming to the Gentry High gym.
Both of the games are expected to tip-off at 7 p.m.
In their most recent play this past week, the Rams not only kept their regional record unblemished Tuesday night with a 77-49 victory over visiting Clarksdale High School, but destroyed all opponents played in this time frame by an average of 29 points per game.
At midpoint in the week last Saturday, the Rams demolished Amanda Elzy High of Greenwood by a 78-49 margin; a dominating victory which followed last Friday’s 77-47 regional thrashing of visiting Tunica Rosa Fort High School.
Against Amanda Elzy High, the game got out of hand early as a 17-4 first period Rams lead grew to a 38-16 halftime margin.
Benefiting from five players reaching double digit scoring status in the Rams’ 29 point victory, it was Brown’s 15 points which led the way.
Adding a dozen points was Darrius Clark, while Joshujuan Townsend and Reginald Bolden added 11 points apiece.
Rounding out the scoring leaders was Ernest Minton with his 10 point night of play.
In their 30 point win over Rosa Fort High, 10 players notched points against the Lions’ defense and Brown led this large group with his 18-point outing.
Clark also reached double figure scoring with his 11 point game.
