Now riding a three-game win streak, the Gentry High Lady Rams will close out a five-game run of home dates Friday night when Callaway High of Jackson visits for a non-regional basketball game.
Taking a 13-9, 5-1 record into this Friday’s contest, the Lady Rams will then hit the road again on Saturday with a trip to Shaw High School.
This upcoming busy week of play will then see the Gentry girls return to their home-court next Tuesday for a date with 5A member Cleveland Central High School.
All of this week’s games are scheduled to tip-off at 6 p.m.
The Lady Rams were able to extend their current win streak on the strength of three victories earned this past week, most recently on Tuesday night with their 49-22 Region 3-4A decision over Clarksdale High School.
Other action this past week saw the Lady Rams claim a 40-27 non-regional win over visiting Amanda Elzy High of Greenwood while last Friday’s play captured another regional victory; on this occasion by way of a 55-34 score over Tunica Rosa Fort High School.
In their game with Clarksdale High, the Lady Rams avenged a January 9 loss to the Lady Wildcats with their dominating 27 point victory.
It would be a 17-0 second period run which would clinch the game for the Lady Rams as they took a 26-5 lead to the dressing room at halftime.
Pacing the Lady Rams’ scoring in this game was sophomore Shacori Dawson with 17 points while another Mercedes Hayes double double contained 13 points and 18 rebounds.
An additional double digit rebounding performance was received from junior Belize Reed, who completed the game by pulling down 10 errant shots.
Meanwhile, last Saturday, the Gentry squad used a 20-8 third period scoring run to break open a narrow 12-11 halftime lead.
Leading the scoring for the Lady Rams in this game was junior Nihya Davis, who pumped 17 points through the basket.
Against Rosa Fort High, it was the third period once again when the Lady Rams separated themselves from their competition.
Behind a 17-5 third period run, the Lady Rams expanded their 26-20 halftime lead and then cruised on to the regional win.
With Hayes’ double double (20 points/14 rebounds) serving as the catalyst, the Gentry squad also received double digit scoring from Davis and Khanijah White, both of whom scored 10 points against the Lady Lions’ defense.
